Themes Essays - Greek Mythology, Ancient Greece, Operas, Antigone

Themes The three major themes are love, loyalty, and irony; the most major theme being irony. Antigone's love for her brother, Polyneices, was so strong, she died for him. Haemon's love for Antigone was so strong, he died with her death. Eurydice's love for her son, Haemon, was so strong, she died with his death. Creon's guilt and love for his wife and son was so strong, he felt he should not go on living after their death. ". . . I speak for you, for me, and for the spirits of the dead. . . The dead? Precisely--you'll never marry her alive. . .Well then, dead--one death beckoning to another. . . " This is part of a conversation between Creon and Haemon while Haemon is standing up for Antigone. Love is constantly being shown through the book. Another quote from the book is said by the Strophe I: ". . . Love, unquelled in battle, Love making nonsense of wealth, Pillowed all night on the cheek of a girl, You roam seas, pervade the wilds, And in a Shepherd's hut you lie. Shadowing immotal gods, You dog ephemeral man--Madness your possession. . . " Another theme is loyalty, which is mostly the same as the theme of love. By loving someone, therefore you are also loyal to them. It follows the same cronilogical order as the theme of love: Polyneices' death brings out Antigone's loyalty, which brings upon her death, which then brings out Haemon's loyalty to Antigone, which brings upon his death, which shows Eurydice's loyalty to her son, which brings about her death, then finally the guilt and grief of Creon. Also, Antigone had to choose which family member to stay loyal to: Creon, her uncle, or Polyneices, her brother. The major theme of the story is irony. Irony is when the meaning of the speakers words are opposite of his actions, which is exactly what is portrayed in this story. To further explain the theme, I will take quotes from the book, and explain them as I go along. The first quote is from Creon. ". . . You wait and see! The toughest will is the first to break: like the hard untempered steel which snaps and shivers at a touch when hot from off the forge. . . She and her sister will not now escape the utmost penalty. . ." There he is contradicting himself by saying people should bend and be lenient, but he won't even give his niece her life. Her sister and future husband, which is Creon's son, all try to convince him to let her go, but he won't bend. The second quote is from Haemon. ". . . But a wise man is flexible, has much to learn without loss of dignity. See the tree in floodtime, how they bend along the torrent's course, and how their twigs and branches so not snap, but stubborn trees are torn up roots and all. In sailing too, when fresh weather blows, a skipper who will not slaken sail, turns turtle, finishes his voyage beam-ends up. . ." His words are trying to tell his father that he must bend the rules, and let Antigone go free, and hinting at some consequenses.

Television News essays

Television News essays How important is it for people to watch the television news? It is very important for people to watch the television news because the news helps people keep up with the events around the world, and the news lets people be aware of what happen in our society. I personally do not like to watch the news because I think it is a boring program, and it is a waste of time to watch its. But my father is the opposite from I am because every morning at 7 oclock, he always watches the CNN Headline News or the Fox News before he goes to work. I always wondered in my mind what it is about the news that he likes so much. But after I had read the essay, Amusing Ourselves to Death, Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business by Neil Postman, now I understand the desire or the entertainment contains in the news that attracts my father and many other television newss viewers. But in order for television newss viewers not to be misleading by the news shows, they must be aware of the difference b etween the news and the entertainments. Or whether, the entertainment source with the news component or the news source with the entertainment component. The importance step that newss viewers must pay attention to when they watch the news is what types of stories that the news shows represent. According to Neil Postman, when the news show represents the disaster stories they had not taken it seriously, and it is all about fun. He declared that, This is why even on news shows which provide us daily with fragments of tragedy and barbarism, we are argued by the newscasters to join them tomorrow. What for? One would think that several minutes of murder and mayhem would suffice as material for a month of sleepless nights. We accept the newscasters invitation because we know that the news is not to be taken seriously, that it is all in fun, so to say. Everything about a news show tells u...

Sex education Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Sex education - Essay Example of learning about sex, how it makes males and females different from each other, yet attracts them to each other and involves deep feelings, desires, sexual identity, relationships and intimacy.19 Puberty is the stage in a child’s life when physical and emotional changes are sudden and unsettling, and to an unprepared child, this can be very unnerving.18 For adolescents who have just entered into the age of puberty, proper and age-suitable sex education can reassure them that what they are experiencing is normal, and most importantly, can prevent them from becoming victims of teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, which are among the most prominent problems faced by the younger generation today..11 In my opinion, there is no such thing as â€Å"too much† sex education. It is an on-going process.2 I think sex education should be part of a school’s curriculum and should ideally inform about 4 topics: sexual development, reproduction, contraception, &

Applied Microbiology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Applied Microbiology - Essay Example Additionally, the accessibility of the microbial genome sequences gives a wide scope of opportunities to understand as well as exploit the microorganisms present in the wine. The influence of molecular revolution in medicinal applications is evidenced by the genetic alteration of bacteria to produce an enzyme that can treat a human disease (Sehgal, 2012). For example, nanotechnology has led to the deliverance of the drug in different forms such as dendrimers, nanoshells and nanotubes to specific genes in humans (Sehgal, 2012). Development of synthetic neology will lead to the extensive application of applied microbiology in the production of biodegradable biomaterials. For instance, it is apparent that bioplastics will replace the production of non-degradable waste materials. In relation to this, microbes such as aerobes, anaerobes as well as photosynthetic bacteria with the ability to accumulate and catabolise polyesters responsible for the formation of bioplastics will be used (Garcia, Luengo, Naharro, Olivera & Sandoval, 2003). Additionally, it is evident that the development of synthetic neology will lead to the large-scale creation of recombinant organisms with the ability to synthesize bioplastics from cheap carbon sources. Apart from replacing non-biodegradable materials, synthetic neology will lead to the production of materials that will be used in the health sector (Garcia et al., 2003). For instance, the polyesters produced by the microorganisms will be used in medical applications like sutures , implants, and urological stents. In addition to this, the polyesters will be used in the treatment of narcolepsy as well as alcohol addiction. Biologic products are derived from natural (biological) products. They include medical products such as vaccines, blood products, and allergenic extracts such as allergy shots. A natural product, on the other hand, is a product of a

Critique on Article The Ends of Happiness Essay Example for Free

Critique on Article The Ends of Happiness Essay Dr Karl Giberson is a professor at Eastern Nazarene College with a PHD in Physics from Rice University. A man approaching his fifties at the writing of this article, Giberson’s solution to his mid-life crisis was to write an article â€Å"The Ends of Happiness†. His article was well written and he tries to impart his experiences with happiness to young adults. In the article, Giberson claims that happiness should be the end result of our efforts and he provides a compelling argument why we should not get caught up in our pursuit of happiness through materialistic gains. However, his arguments to back his thesis are inadequate due to an inherent contradiction in his supporting point and one unproven assumption in his article. Giberson (2006) uses the Candy Experiment with children to prove his point that our ability to withhold satisfaction leads to a â€Å"life time of happiness† (para. 5). He further explains that â€Å"unpleasant means can yield satisfying ends† (2006). This implies that our happiness will increase if we are able to set aside the things that make us happy, and work towards our goal. However, in his later argument, the author seems to imply that the happiest moments in his life, were times when he did not work towards materialistic gains. For instance, he claims he â€Å"lived well†, when he â€Å"left work early† and spent his time with his family (Giberson, 2006, para.12, 13 14). This illustrates his point that the most memorable moments in life comes from relationships as opposed to material gains (Giberson, 2006). While the latter argument supports his thesis, the former contradicts it by implying that happiness is something to be achieved through materialistic gains. This is shown in Giberson’s example about a student graduating with â€Å"greater earning power† (2006) and how this ability â€Å"is the formula for a lifetime of happiness† (Giberson, 2006, para. 5). Furthermore, Giberson’s argument seems to be contingent on one major assumption. That happiness gained from acquiring things, is less meaningful than happiness gained from spending time with family and friends. To illustrate his point, he cites evidence from his own memories. He states that memories gained from family time are clearer than the memories of â€Å"buying his first car† and â€Å"cashing his first paycheck† (Giberson, 2006, para.14). Giberson then applies this line of reasoning to back his thesis by showing us how happiness from material gains alone reduces our overall happiness as our social interactions decrease (Giberson, 2006). However, such opinionated evidence provides weak support to his thesis and even though he did not plan on writing a scientific article, using personal memories to validate such a major assumption weakens his argument substantially. In conclusion, Giberson has indeed written a well-structured editorial with many coherent and interesting points. However, contradicting arguments and one unsupported assumption in the article has undermined his thesis and weakened his argument. Giberson’s thesis would have fared much better had he quoted from valid sources instead of his own personal experiences. Reference Giberson, K. (2006, Mar. Apr.). The Ends Of Happiness. A Degree in Education Essay -- College Admissions Essays

A Degree in Education I have been extremely fortunate to grow up in the type of environment that most people would call an "all-American town." All my life I have known I was very blessed to live here. The community where I live is not too large or too small. It is just the right size to provide the closeness and bonding that I have known and grow to love. This town is extremely family and church oriented and has a great school system. All of these things have had a very positive impact on my life. My experiences here have led me to the decision that a college degree in the field of education would present me with rewarding professional and personal challenges, and provide many opportunities to share the positive benefits I have received with another generation. ... ...things that I have learned and held so very dear to others, who hopefully will then pass those values to someone else. The morals, lessons, and knowledge that have been instilled in me by my mentors, friends, teachers, and parents have persuaded me that a college degree in education would be the best way for me to pass on the great values that I have earned and learned from my community.

Prison Overcrowding

This paper will discuss prison overcrowding and what type of numbers have come about over the years when it comes to inmates being imprisoned. It will discuss the cost of a prisoner annually as well as the decision to add verses build when it comes to new facilities. The overcrowding in one particular prison will be touched on as well as whose responsibility it is for upkeep. It will discuss how funding plays a role in overcrowding as well as the â€Å"three strikes† rule in California and how big of an impact it has made on the prison system.Lastly, society’s choice to vote will be touched on as how large of a determining factor it is in overcrowding prisons. State and Federal Prisons housed approximately 1. 3 million inmates in the year 2000, not to mention the jails had an estimate of 600,000 as well. Ten years previous the prisons housed 700,000 inmates and jails were at about 400,000. At that rate, the population of people being incarcerated almost doubled from 1. 1 million to 1. 9 million inmates. The last count in 2008 jumped again to an astonishing 2. million imprisoned within the country (Diiulio, Jr. , J. , 2010, March). Factors that contribute to prison and jail overcrowding is that so many people are incarcerated each year, funding, upkeep of a facility, the three strikes rule and tax payers are unwilling to pass levees. One of the largest reasons prisons are overcrowded today is that it is reported that one out of every 99. 1 adults are currently in prison or jail. This is the largest number in nation’s history and seven times the inmate rate from 1973.Amazingly ninety-five percent of prisoners are released back into communities to continue living their lives. They are not thrown to the wolves; they are released â€Å"with a basic education, job training and preparation, improved pro-social pattern of thinking, adequate life/social skills, and a lowered risk for substance abuse, anger and self esteem issues† (Boehm, D. P . , & Lampert, R. O. , 2008, October). If an inmate needs continued treatment once released, they are provided the assistance and resources to make the transition as successful as possible.Even when a prisoner was on a psychotic medication when released they are hooked up with a regional mental health and substance abuse center to make their reentry as flourishing (Boehm, D. P. , & Lampert, R. O. , 2008, October). At 157 percent capacity, San Quintin State Prison, a maximum security prison is no doubt overcrowded and it costs about $49,000 each year for an adult inmate to be housed in the San Quintin State Prison (Sterngold, J. , 2008, July/August). Taxpayers are unwilling to pass levees to build facilities to house prisoners which lead to an overcrowding prison. The criminal justice system needs to have stronger sentences for crimes to deter people from offending to begin with and not release inmates early due to overcrowding. Inmates are being released early because there are not e nough beds to hold all of the criminals. In the end it leads to a higher crime rate because the inmate’s count of being released early and they are not being reformed. A way to reduce funding problems is to have inmates take care of their own facilities like they would their homes.Cleaning supplies can be handed to the inmates and it can be their job to clean the showers. It should not be the responsibility of the prison staff to keep the facility clean, the inmates should be given duties and be held accountable or forced to live in the conditions they allow for themselves. Funds should not be taken from the taxpayers to pay someone to clean up after the inmates, the taxpayers’ funds could be used for security and building to prevent additional overcrowding. The problem with many jails and prisons today is the upkeep. Most facilities today do not have the funding to build a brand new facility but what needs to happen is to make the additions and upgrades more efficient. Replacing a furnace or air conditioning system for a place a huge as a prison could be extremely time consuming and expensive especially if the newer model is not the most efficient and then has to be replaced again and again prematurely. The best way to spend the taxpayers’ money is to buy the most energy efficient and best model and not replace it as often. As the age old saying, â€Å"you get what you pay for. The same goes for other materials when doing an addition or fixing an existing structure, the administrators need to take the time to research and see what the best materials are for longevity and spend money wisely (Lucas, R. , 2009, November/December).As Robert Lucas (2009) said, â€Å"Money spent well at the beginning of a project may save the facility from spending more in the future. † Like California, many other states have the â€Å"three strikes† rule and one of every nine of the inmates who are on their third strike get 25 to life sentence (H aerens, M. , 2010, May 15). This rule contributes to the vercrowding issue which an individual is taking up more space in jails and prisons. For example, if a person is charged three times with felony drug trafficking and is convicted that would be the third offence and would serve twenty-five year to life in jail. A violent offender, like a murderer, could that the place of that individual and rot in jail and make the community safer, it is the lesser of two evils. There are many factors that contribute to prison and jail overcrowding, funding, upkeep, three strikes rule, taxpayers not wanting to pass levees and the fact that so many people each year are incarcerated.Funding can be redirected if the upgrades were made more efficiently around the prisons. To help save money, inmates can do daily duties and have responsibilities around the prison and jail grounds. The three strikes rule needs to be revised to focus on violent crimes. Tax payers need to stop complaining about criminal s in the community unless they are willing to pass the levees to build jails and prisons to lessen the likelihood of overcrowding.References Boehm, D. Prison Overcrowding This paper will discuss prison overcrowding and what type of numbers have come about over the years when it comes to inmates being imprisoned. 6 Steps to Tailor Your Resume for Any Job Posting

6 Steps to Tailor Your Resume for Any Job Posting All of the job search advice these days stresses the need to tailor your resume to the job you are applying for, rather than blitzing out 50 generic ones. Trouble is, you’re not quite sure how to tailor your resume. Here are a few tips you can follow to make sure this process is a breeze, setting you up for success with whatever hiring manager gets your documents.1. Read carefully.First step is actually reading and comprehending the job posting and what it’s asking for in a candidate. Do yourself a favor and read it through with a highlighter. Mark all of the most important aspects, particularly anything that’s repeated or out of the ordinary- or that happens to match your particular skills. Knowing what the job entails is your top priority. Nothing else matters.2. Don’t bury the lead.Figure out what the most important or exciting match between your candidacy and the posting might be. What will really get the hiring manager’s attention? Maybe itâ₠¬â„¢s your current position, or a certification you recently achieved. Even if it isn’t your most recent accomplishment. Then make sure to feature that right up front- as in: the first section of your resume.3. Revamp your bullets.Be sure to take your major focus points out of later bullet points. But do also make sure to include some of the most relevant soft skills that would make you stand out as ideal for the job. Spin these bullet points to support your main focus and supplement your candidacy for that one job. 4. Cross check again and again. Now that you’ve done some work on your resume, go back to your highlighted job posting and make sure that anything you highlighted there appears verbatim somewhere on your resume- and preferably somewhere prominently featured.5. Add detail.Wherever possible, add numbers and details to help your skills (aka â€Å"Customer service skills†) shine out as something more tangible. (Aka â€Å"Boosted revenues by 10% and upped customer retention†).6. Pimp your cover letter.Don’t make the mistake of sending a perfectly tailored resume with a generic cover letter. Make sure you also spend some time tailoring your cover letter, in much the same way.Bottom line: Make sure both your resume and your cover letter pass the keyword test, including and/or featuring any and every keyword that appears in the job posting.

Linear Regression Statistics and Analysis

Linear Regression Statistics and Analysis Linear regression is a statistical technique that is used to learn more about the relationship between an independent (predictor) variable and a dependent (criterion) variable. When you have more than one independent variable in your analysis, this is referred to as multiple linear regression. In general, regression allows the researcher to ask the general question â€Å"What is the best predictor of†¦?† For example, let say we were studying the causes of obesity, measured by body mass index (BMI). In particular, we wanted to see if the following variables were significant predictors of a person’s BMI: number of fast food meals eaten per week, number of hours of television watched per week, the number of minutes spent exercising per week, and parents’ BMI. Linear regression would be a good methodology for this analysis. The Regression Equation When you are conducting a regression analysis with one independent variable, the regression equation is Y a b*X where Y is the dependent variable, X is the independent variable, a is the constant (or intercept), and b is the slope of the regression line. For example, let’s say that GPA is best predicted by the regression equation 1 0.02*IQ. If a student had an IQ of 130, then, his or her GPA would be 3.6 (1 0.02*130 3.6). When you are conducting a regression analysis in which you have more than one independent variable, the regression equation is Y a b1*X1 b2*X2 †¦ bp*Xp. For example, if we wanted to include more variables to our GPA analysis, such as measures of motivation and self-discipline, we would use this equation. R-Square R-square, also known as the coefficient of determination, is a commonly used statistic to evaluate the model fit of a regression equation. That is, how good are all of your independent variables at predicting your dependent variable? The value of R-square ranges from 0.0 to 1.0 and can be multiplied by 100 to obtain a percentage of variance explained. For example, going back to our GPA regression equation with only one independent variable (IQ)†¦Let’s say that our R-square for the equation was 0.4. We could interpret this to mean that 40% of the variance in GPA is explained by IQ. If we then add our other two variables (motivation and self-discipline) and the R-square increases to 0.6, this means that IQ, motivation, and self-discipline together explain 60% of the variance in GPA scores. Regression analyses are typically done using statistical software, such as SPSS or SAS and so the R-square is calculated for you. Interpreting the Regression Coefficients (b) The b coefficients from the equations above represent the strength and direction of the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. If we look at the GPA and IQ equation, 1 0.02*130 3.6, 0.02 is the regression coefficient for the variable IQ. This tells us that the direction of the relationship is positive so that as IQ increases, GPA also increases. If the equation were 1 - 0.02*130 Y, then this would mean that the relationship between IQ and GPA was negative. Assumptions There are several assumptions about the data that must be met in order to conduct a linear regression analysis: Linearity: It is assumed that the relationship between the independent and dependent variables is linear. Though this assumption can never be fully confirmed, looking at a scatterplot of your variables can help make this determination. If a curvature in the relationship is present, you may consider transforming the variables or explicitly allowing for nonlinear components.Normality: It is assumed that the residuals of your variables are normally distributed. That is, the errors in the prediction of the value of Y (the dependent variable) are distributed in a way that approaches the normal curve. You can look at histograms or normal probability plots to inspect the distribution of your variables and their residual values.Independence: It is assumed that the errors in the prediction of the value of Y are all independent of one another (not correlated).Homoscedasticity: It is assumed that the variance around the regression line is the same for all values of the independent variables. Case 2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Case 2 - Essay Example Once the development team understands it needs teams instead of groups, it can proceed to form them. It would be waste of time for the organization to come to the realization, when much progress has been made, that it has workgroups instead of work teams. That would be a waste of financial and human resources and time. Good group members are likely to be people who share a group’s mentality and objectives. Group effectiveness is determined in large part by commonality of goals among its members. A group in which members have the same mission and vision is, more often than not, free of differences in actions. Members think and act as one. A good group member actively participates in group affairs; he is not an observant in the activities of the group. Whenever there is something to be done or discussed, good group members avail themselves to make efforts worthwhile. Finally, potentially good group members have the skill set required to contribute to the group’s success and activities. For example, it would be pointless to have a human resource expert in a group formed to develop better engineering techniques in an organization. This is not to say that a human resource professional has no role to play in such a group, but that his role would be so limited that it would cease to make sense. In such a scenario, the HR expert would be better suited to a group formed to explore better recruitment and retention strategies. Individual skill sets in a group should complement each other if any progress is to be made. The principles of diversity and personality are very important in managing conflict in groups. The development team must understand that its members must be different. There will never be an instance in which all members of a team agree on everything. There will also never be an instance in which all team members share the same background, experiences, culture, religion, or race (Robbins and Judge 263). The team should use
